How to Create a Repair Shop SOP That Actually Gets Followed

Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are the backbone of a consistent repair shop. But if your technicians ignore them, they're worthless. Here's how to write SOPs that your team will actually use.

Keep It Short and Visual

No one reads a 10-page manual. Write each SOP as a one-page checklist with bullet points. Use photos or diagrams for complex steps. For example, a screen replacement SOP might have 5 steps: power off, remove screws, disconnect battery, heat edges, pry screen. Print it and laminate it for the bench.

Involve Your Technicians

Ask your best tech to help write the SOP. They know the real workflow. When they contribute, they're more likely to follow it. Plus, they'll spot steps that sound good on paper but don't work in practice.

Test and Revise

After writing an SOP, have a new hire follow it while you watch. Note where they get confused or slow down. Update the SOP based on their feedback. Repeat until it's smooth.

Make It Easy to Find

Enforce Consistently
