How to Handle a Phone with a Broken Microphone: Step-by-Step Diagnosis for Repair Shops

A customer calls in and says "you're on speaker, I can't hear you" — or worse, they only find out after three people tell them they sound muffled. Microphone faults are one of the most common walk-in complaints, and they're also one of the easiest to misdiagnose because the symptom usually points at the wrong part. Here's a practical workflow for isolating the real cause before you quote a repair.

Start by Confirming Which Mic Is Failing
Modern phones have two to four microphones, and each one handles a different job. Before you touch a screwdriver, find out exactly what the customer experiences.
- Main (bottom) mic — used for normal voice calls held to the ear, and for most voice recordings.
- Secondary/top mic — handles noise cancellation and speakerphone calls.
- Rear camera mic — used for video recording.
- Front mic — video calls and selfie video.
Ask the customer: does the other person hear you on a normal call, on speakerphone, on video, or in voice memos? The answer narrows the fault to one mic path in seconds.
Run a Five-Minute Diagnostic Sequence
- Test all four paths. Place a real call, a speakerphone call, record a voice memo, and record a short video. Note which ones are silent, muffled, or full of static.
- Inspect and clean the mesh. Pocket lint, adhesive residue, and case gunk block the bottom mic port constantly. Blow it out with dry air and gently brush the mesh. A surprising share of "dead mic" tickets end here.
- Check the case and screen protector. Cases that cover the mic hole or misaligned protectors blocking the top mic cause muffled audio on speakerphone only.
- Test with a known-good accessory. A Bluetooth headset that works fine tells you the phone's audio processing is healthy and the fault is in the mic hardware or its port.
- Check for recent repair history. If the screen or charging port was replaced recently, suspect a pinched flex cable, a loose connector, or a damaged mic gasket from the previous job.
- Inspect the charging port board. On many models the bottom mic lives on the charging port flex. If the phone also has charging or speaker issues, that assembly is the likely culprit.
- Look for liquid or corrosion. Water damage often kills the mic first because the port sits at the lowest point of the frame. Check the liquid contact indicator and inspect the board under magnification.
- Test the software side. Confirm the customer isn't on mute, check that no app has exclusive mic access, and verify permissions in settings. A quick test recording in a different app rules out a software hang.
Quote and Document the Repair Properly
Once you know which mic path failed, quote the correct part — a bottom mic flex is a very different job from a board-level audio IC fault. Write the diagnosis into the ticket with the exact tests you ran, so any technician can pick it up and the customer can see why the price is what it is.
- Photograph the mic mesh and port before cleaning.
- Note which call types failed and which passed.
- Record whether the fault is mechanical, liquid-related, or board-level.
- Get approval on the quote before ordering parts.
Set Customer Expectations
Tell the customer that a mic repair is usually quick, but that a board-level audio fault takes longer and may need a second diagnostic pass. If the phone was recently repaired elsewhere, explain that a pinched flex is a common cause and that you'll confirm it on the bench before charging for a new part.
Keep the Workflow Consistent
Microphone tickets are easy to rush because they look simple, but the four-path test is what separates a confident diagnosis from a parts-swap guess. Build the sequence into your intake checklist so every technician runs the same steps, logs the same results, and quotes from evidence instead of instinct.
